The 119th United States Congress is the current meeting of the legislative branch of the United States federal government, composed of the United States Senate and the United States House of Representatives. It convened in Washington, D.C., on January 3, 2025, and will end on January 3, 2027, during the start of both Phil Reed's and Martha Holley's Presidential Terms.
In the 2024 elections, the Democratic Party gained the house and unseated incumbent speaker, Andrew Reed, held the senate, and held the Presidency. This marks the first time a speaker has been unseated since the 104th, and the first Democratic trifecta since the 117th, although, President Reed switched parties to the Republicans, ending the trifecta.
This congress also features the first third party president pro tempore (Thomas Duberry) and the first Jewish Speaker of the House (Eli Goldstein) in congressional history. Additionally, it was also marked the first time that both Senate Party leaders lost their leadership roles (Martha Holley (D) Retired and Thomas Larson (R) remained absent during voting).
